They decided to take the right passageway and found that the trail they were following seemed to descend slowly with every step that they took.

"Let's find a good place to rest, " Derek said to Lana as the two continued to attempt to find their way to the surface.

The two adventurers left a civilized life of luxury often to experience some of the more exciting things of life; and although they didn't yet know it, this was going to prove to be one of their most exciting adventures. Their search for the diamonds wasn't motivated by necessity, but by their need for adventure; and in the end, this may have been the fact that saved them. The diamonds were only the excuse that they used this time to leave their home in the big city and sail to the tropical coastal city where the sidewalk meets the jungle, where they backpacked through the thick steaming jungle to the mountain from which they were now trying to escape.

"Let's stop," Lana replied; "let's try to find a place where one of these big rocks is nice and flat."

It didn't take long to find a suitable rock, since rocks were almost all they were experiencing; and luckily, Lana still had her backpack with some of their survival equipment and survival rations. Derek had lost his backpack when they had to quickly escape from their camp inside the mountain when the tremors struck.

They sat there and discussed their adventure so far while replenishing themselves with nutrition bars; and just as they started talking about the tremors, another tremor struck and caused a small cave-in in the passage behind them, sealing their retreat forever.

"Let's go," said Derek; "we have to get out!"

Grabbing her backpack as they quickly got up from the rock, Derek and Lana pushed on as fast as they could in the dark.

"I think we're going back into the mountain," said Derek; "we keep going downhill."

"We don't have any other way out," said Lana; "if we keep going like this, we might find our camp in the heart of the mountain."

"If we get there, we can get the rest of our supplies," Derek replied.

The two adventurers kept pushing on until they noticed what seemed like a reddish glow up ahead; and Derek said, "We have gone back to the heart."

"If we can find our camp, we can get our flashlights again!" Lana declared. "Good thing I still have the batteries! How long do you think that we have?"

"We don't have any choices; there's no other way," Derek admitted; "once we find our camp, we can follow the same way out we went before and take the other passageway."

They followed the passage down to the heart of the mountain and walked right out to the edge and looked down into the fiery abyss. To the right was a steep climb up a small mountain of solidified magma, and to the left was a treacherous climb around the chimney.
