They decided that since they could see their route around the chimney, they would take this route since they had no idea what was over the top of the small mountain of solidified magma.

Lana took a rope out of her backpack, and they tied themselves together. Derek led, and they started to negotiate the dangerous path around the chimney. They couldn't use pitons, but rather had to tie the rope off on any available protrusion since there was no way that Lana, just in case Derek fell, could hold Derek's weight.

The path was no path at all, but rather a climb from one foot and hand hold to the next. The chimney reached up as far as they could see and down into the abyss itself. They knew that once they started, there was no turning back or stopping for a rest.

Slowly, they moved from one hold to the next, carefully proceeding on their chosen route until they reached the other side.

When they finally stepped on to the level area on the other side, they looked to their right and saw that they had reached the area of their camp. At the other side of this level area at the bottom of a gently sloping hill (that led up to the top of the small mountain of solidified magma) was their missing camp.
