The mountain peak was so high that they could see for miles in all directions; but somehow, things looked different than before. They looked around and couldn't see anything familiar and thought that, since they were so new to the area, they might not recognize the scene.
It was a long, easy walk down the gently sloping volcano; but they hurried as fast as they could because they didn't want to be near the mountain in case it erupted.
When they reached the base of the mountain, they looked for a familiar trail; but they couldn't find the trail they used before.
"We have to get as far away from here as we can," Derek told Lana. "We just have to go."
They ran into the jungle and started to follow some trail that was probably made by animals. The sun was high in the sky, and the shadows of the trees shielded them from the scorching sun overhead. They heard the sounds of birds calling and the cries of faraway animals, somewhere in the distant jungle.
Lana said, "I'm getting hungry."
Derek looked up at the trees and said, "Dinner is served!"
Lana said, "This beats eating those nutrient bars we've been eating before."
They sat in the shade and ate some of the fruit from the trees and discussed what they were going to do now.
While they were talking, Derek pulled out his compass to see which way they would have to go to reach the city and discovered that his compass needle was spinning in circles. He looked at Lana and said, "We have to decide which way to go!"
